Είμαι ιδιαίτερα ευγνώμων για αυτή την πολύ θερμή υποδοχή και πολύ χαρούμενος που βρίσκομαι εδώ στην Οττάβα, στην πρώτη μου επίσκεψη στον Καναδά. Σας ευχαριστώ για τα πολύ θερμά σας λόγια. Είμαστε φίλοι, μοιραζόμαστε τις ίδιες αξίες.
Πέραν τούτου όμως, νομίζω ότι έχουμε πολλά να συζητήσουμε- γεωπολιτικές προκλήσεις στην Ουκρανία, στην Ευρώπη, στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο, σε όλο τον κόσμο. Αλλά και θέματα που έχουν να κάνουν με τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα, τα δικαιώματα των γυναικών, τα δικαιώματα των παιδιών. Επίσης δε, πώς μπορούμε να ενισχύσουμε τις οικονομικές μας σχέσεις, πώς μπορούμε να κάνουμε περισσότερα από κοινού.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ address at the lunch hosted by Greek Diaspora associations in Canada (Montreal, 15.03.2023)
Dear Mélanie, Madame Minister, first of all, I will save you the trouble of listening to me speaking in French, with my very good French pronunciation. With your permission, I am going to speak only in English.
For me, it is such a great pleasure to be in Canada, in Montreal today, after fruitful discussions with Mélanie. I am not returning a compliment by saying openly to all of you what is very well known, not just in Canada, but around NATO and around Europe: That Mélanie is a very promising young Foreign Minister who is going to excel in the years to come. We will see her all the more around the world in these very difficult times formulating policy and explaining what needs to be done in the geopolitical challenges we are facing nowadays. So for me it is a great honour to come, first of all to Ottawa, and listen to her and understand her views, the views of the Canadian government and the Canadian society.
Also, I am very proud to be here today, among the Greek community, among my compatriots, and be able to see how the two worlds, the Canadian and the Greek, are being combined around the same values, around the same principles. And I would like to thank you all so much for hosting us here together. I am very happy to be here with you and I hope that I will have many occasions to return and allow me, please, to promise that I will bring Prime Minister Mitsotakis with me.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ statement during his visit in Montreal with his Canadian counterpart, Mélanie Joly (Montreal, 15.03.2023)
It is a great pleasure and a great honour to be received here in Montreal today by Mélanie Joly, the Canadian Foreign Minister, a great friend of Greece. I would like to warmly thank her, not just for her hospitality but also for how she expressed herself because of the tragedy we had in Greece a few days ago in Tempi.
In a few minutes, we will go to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, here in Montreal, and we will pay our respects to the victims of this terrible accident.
But apart from that, I would like to say how proud I am to be here among the Greek Community in Montreal. Our compatriots have come here in Canada, have worked within Canadian society, have made us proud.
Mélanie, thank you so much for your warm hospitality.

Your Eminence, Πανοσιολογιώτατε,
My dear colleague, if you allow me,
Μέλη του Κοινοβουλίου, της τοπικής αυτοδιοίκησης,
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am sorry I am mixing Greek and English but I take it that’s the way it goes.
Well, His Eminence was kind enough to treat me better than everybody else. He says we treat outsiders better. So, thank you so much. But, please allow me to say I do not feel an outsider at all here. I feel very much at home. And thank Your Eminence and all of you. And thank you Mélanie and thank you dear friends for making me feel that way. I have to say the warmth of your presence, the warmth of the Greek community in Montreal is something amazing for me coming from Greece here for the first time in my life. And please allow me to promise you that it will not be my last at all.
As Mélanie was kind enough to say, the very important fact that we see happening is that you have developed the ability to preserve two very important elements, δύο πολύ σημαντικά πράγματα. The first one is our language. Την ελληνική γλώσσα. Because, as I said before, this language represents a connection with our civilization, with our tradition, with our history. The language is something that is alive. It expresses emotions, it expresses experiences, it expresses victories, it expresses defeats, it expresses tragedies.
Ποιος σε αυτόν τον κόσμο μπορεί να μεταφράσει τη λέξη Άλωση και να την καταλάβει όπως την καταλαβαίνουν οι Έλληνες, σαν τραγωδία; Σε όποια γλώσσα και αν τη μεταφράσεις; Λοιπόν, αυτό είναι το πρώτο που μας καθορίζει.
Το δεύτερο, the second one is our relation with the Orthodox Church. Not just the building or the fact that we come together once or twice a week during a liturgy but this spirit that is behind the Greek Orthodox Church. Earlier, I was proud to show Mélanie the icons, two-dimensional icons, and what they represent as a philosophy, as an understanding of the world. What’s worth moving forward and what’s not that important.
So, thank you so much for protecting this proud tradition. And thank you so much for keeping the connection with the motherland. But at the same time, again as Mélanie said, being part of a very proud example of a multi-ethnic, democratic society that protects human rights, which is Canada.

Είναι μεγάλη μου χαρά και μεγάλη μου τιμή που βρίσκομαι σήμερα εδώ, ανάμεσα σας, και πρέπει να σας πω ότι είμαι ιδιαίτερα συγκινημένος γι’αυτό. Γιατί θα μου επιτρέψετε να νιώθω ότι βρίσκομαι ανάμεσα στους συμπατριώτες μου, οι οποίοι πέρασαν τον Ατλαντικό και σε μία νέα και δυναμική χώρα τα κατάφεραν. Και τα κατάφεραν μεταφέροντας σε αυτή τη νέα και δυναμική χώρα το πνεύμα της πατρίδας μας.
Και θα ήθελα επίσης να σας πω ότι είμαι πάρα πολύ συγκινημένος όταν βλέπω το σήμα του σχολείου εδώ και της κοινότητας. Ο ιωνικός κίονας, η αρχαία μας παράδοση, ο δικέφαλος αετός, η υπερ-χιλιόχρονη μεσαιωνική αυτοκρατορία του Βυζαντίου, το αστέρι της Βεργίνας, και τα δύο σήματα του Κεμπέκ και του Καναδά, όλα μέσα σε ένα μπλε φόντο που εκπροσωπεί με τον καλύτερο τρόπο, σαν χρώμα, αυτό που εμείς είμαστε και αισθανόμαστε.
Θα ήθελα, από την πλευρά της Ελληνικής Κυβέρνησης, να σας ευχαριστήσω από τα βάθη της καρδιάς μου, επίσης, γιατί διατηρείτε ένα πράγμα που μας κρατάει όλους μαζί, και αυτό είναι η γλώσσα μας. Γιατί η γλώσσα μας δεν είναι απλώς ο τρόπος που συνεννοούμαστε. Είναι αυτή η ουσία που μεταφέρει μαζί της, με τις λέξεις της, με τις αποχρώσεις των λέξεών της, με την τεράστια διαφορά σημασίας που έχουν οι λέξεις με τον τρόπο που τις χρησιμοποιούμε, μια παράδοση 3.000 ετών.
Είναι ένα μεγάλο ποτάμι, σαν τα πολλά μεγάλα ποτάμια που έχει ο Καναδάς, που μεταφέρει μαζί του αισθήματα, καταστροφές, επιτυχίες, νίκες, ήττες, θριάμβους, γεννήσεις, θανάτους, μνήμες χιλιάδων ετών. Άρα, μας εκφράζει, μας ενώνει. Αν χάσουμε τη γλώσσα μας κι αν χάσουμε την επικοινωνία, Σεβασμιώτατε, με την Εκκλησία μας, και ό,τι αυτό εκπροσωπεί για εμάς, χάνουμε τον συνεκτικό μας ιστό.
Θα ήθελα λοιπόν από την καρδιά μου να σας ευχαριστήσω, γιατί η Κοινότητα και το ελληνικό σχολείο, κύριε Πρόεδρε, διατηρεί και μεταφέρει στις νεότερες γενιές αυτή την τεράστια υπερήφανη παράδοση.

Dear Mr. President,
Honourable Members of Parliament,
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am so proud to be here today and, if you’ll allow me to say, so touched, I may even become emotional. Because seeing you here, beyond the ocean, being so successful but at the same time saving and passing down to the younger generation the Greek tradition, the Greek language, staying connected with the Greek Orthodox Church and our tradition, is so important.
Also, I would like to pay my respect and express my gratitude to Mélanie. Mélanie is an excellent Foreign Minister for Canada. But she is something far beyond that; she is an excellent Minister of the values, of the principles that Greece expresses in today’s world. And we thank her so much for that. Because these values and principles are the same values and principles Canada stands for.
So, I would like to ask you to continue, in this proud country, to support those values and those principles.
Thank you so much for being here today.
