Nepal Flash Floods: UN Women Gender Alert #1 (29 August 2026)
On 26 August 2026, severe flooding along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers affected communities across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan districts, causing loss of life, displacement and damage to homes, infrastructure, agricultural land and livelihoods. An estimated 157,050 women and girls living in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts have been impacted directly and indirectly.
The differentiated impacts on women and girls are not yet fully known. Initial information points to heightened risks associated with displacement and protection, access to safe WASH and essential health services, food and nutrition insecurity, loss of livelihoods and increased unpaid care responsibilities, and barriers to accessing humanitarian assistance and participating in recovery.
This Gender Alert draws on available emergency information, initial reporting from women’s rights organizations, pre-crisis gender data and evidence from previous disasters in Nepal to identify emerging gender risks and priority actions for the humanitarian response.
