Trump ordered Marines and more troops to California

Tensions began to rise in downtown Los Angeles last night after a mostly quiet day of protests against President Trump’s deportation roundups, and following the administration’s orders to more than double the number of military forces being sent to the area. Here’s the latest.

Law enforcement officers fired flash bangs and foam rounds to disperse a crowd of protesters, and police officers and National Guard troops in riot gear surrounded a federal building as night approached. But protesters then began to spread out, with some moving into the nearby area of Little Tokyo. We have live updates and photos of the protests.

Top officials in California have clashed with Washington over the protests, as the Trump administration’s new deployments brought the number of federal forces to 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 active-duty Marines. California leaders said yesterday that they would file a lawsuit against Trump for deploying the troops.

Media: Several reporters have been injured while covering the protests in Los Angeles. Lauren Tomasi of 9News Australia, a CNN affiliate, was struck when an officer fired a nonlethal projectile while she was on the air. A Times reporter, also struck with a nonlethal round late Sunday, was treated at a hospital but was not seriously injured.

From the U.S.: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health secretary, fired all 17 members of the advisory committee on immunization to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, saying that the move would restore the public’s trust in vaccines.

Ukraine said it came under biggest drone attack so far

Russia launched almost 500 drones and missiles at Ukraine, the largest drone barrage since the war began more than three years ago, Ukrainian forces said yesterday.

Ukraine’s air defenses shot down most of the weapons. There were no reports of major damage, and only one person was killed. Russia has dramatically increased the pace of such attacks as peace talks have stalled.

Russia and Ukraine also said yesterday that a prisoner exchange was underway. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said that a swap of “the wounded, the severely wounded, and those under the age of 25” had begun and would continue over the coming days.

On the ground: In Crimea, Russian visitors still go to the beach, hoping to avoid Ukrainian drone attacks.

Defense: The chief of NATO on Monday called on the alliance to make a “quantum leap in our collective defense,” committing to vast increases in military spending.

Hamas was accused of threatening aid workers

The Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which was set up to bypass the traditional aid distribution system run by the U.N., has accused Hamas of threatening to attack workers handing out food supplies. Hamas denied the accusations and accused the aid group of lacking neutrality.

The distribution centers of the much-criticized new aid system for Gaza have been mired in chaos. Shootings near aid distribution centers have killed dozens of people and wounded hundreds since the foundation began operations at the end of May.

Aid ship: After intercepting the ship Madleen on its way to Gaza, Israel said its passengers, including the activist Greta Thunberg, would be returned to their home countries.

You’ve heard of fine wine. Now, get ready to savor fine water. The taste of each variety is distinct to a place, rich with minerals the water picked up as it traveled to the surface of the earth. There’s water gathered from nets hung in a misty Tasmanian pine forest, or filtered through Peruvian volcanic rock.

Read more from my colleague Kim Severson, who watched six connoisseurs taste 107 varieties of fine water.

How to be an artist

Having a career as an artist was never especially easy, but it’s possible that it’s becoming harder. T Magazine interviewed four seasoned artists about where their obsessions came from — and what they did about the obstacles thrown in their way.

“Being an artist is an extraordinarily privileged life,” said the painter Lisa Yuskavage, 63, above. “But it’s not like the privilege of, ‘I can buy new shoes when I want, and I’ve had the experience where I couldn’t and now I can.’ The privilege is being able to make something.”
