A Black Cleopatra?
The casting of Adele James, a biracial British actress, as the formidable ancient Egyptian queen Cleopatra in the Netflix docudrama series “African Queens” has resulted in a brouhaha that has reached even the Egyptian government. Cleopatra, critics say, was not Black — and that portrayal is at best a misreading, and at worst a negation, of Egyptian history.
The show’s producers say that question marks in Cleopatra’s family tree leave room for the possibility that her mother was of another background, including Indigenous Egyptian.
“Why do some people need Cleopatra to be white?” the show’s director, Tina Gharavi, wrote in Variety last month. “Perhaps it’s not just that I’ve directed a series that portrays Cleopatra as Black, but that I have asked Egyptians to see themselves as Africans, and they are furious at me for that.”
Writing in The Financial Times, the columnist Stephen Bush argues: “Is Cleopatra Black, or white? The answer is ‘neither.’ These are terms that had absolutely no meaning in the ancient world, and which change their significance constantly in our own time.”
